Best Sellers box is gone; I took the advice of

Let me start by saying that my intention is not to exploit someone or hurt their feelings. I saw a thread concerning resetting the items in the Best Sellers list. I read it....advice came...someone else apparently took it and wrote back with a hearty 'Thanks!' and I ended up doing the same. And now my Best Sellers box on my home-page is gone. Poof.

I had conducted a number of test purchases under assorted fake US and International ID's just to make sure the shipping mods were working correctly. So, I ended up with a Bestseller List on my screen of those very fake purchases.

Now that I'm actually SELLING things off the website....yea!....I wanted to eliminate those items from the box and have it reflect actual purchases made in the last two weeks.

So.....I do what is recommended. Log in to my c-panel....click on phpmyadmin.....click on Products....and browse thru my 300+ items searching for those three that perpetually show up in my Best Seller's box. I'm supposed to change their Products Ordered field from 1 to 0. So, I find the first one. Change it to zero and click on save. Then, I refreshed my home-page of the website.....I've now gone from THREE best-sellers showing to TWO. In other words, the other items that have sold....none of them appeared to take the place of their third I just changed and sent 'out' of the Best Seller's box.

I guess that should have triggered alarms, but it didn't. I thought it was strange, but kept going anyway......searching for the remaining two that were still there.

I found them....on the same page in phpmyadmin.....selected both....and proceeded to change their Products Ordered field from 1 to zero. And saved.

I refreshed my website's home-page.....and my Best Sellers box is GONE. I mean.......GONE.

I immediately went into mywebsite/admin and looked at the minimum and maximum values I had set for Best Sellers. This little change I had made wiped out my minimum value setting of 3 and reset it to 0. So, I changed it back to 3. Then I looked at the maximum value.....still holding at 5 where I left it. Refreshed my home-page.....still no Best Sellers box.

I did absolutely NOTHING with regard to manipulating PHP files or anything of that nature. My admin settings are now 4 minimum and 5 maximum for the Best Sellers box, yet no such box appears on my website anymore.

Can someone please help? I'd like to have it back. And given how these programs are so intertwined, I'm terrifically worried that more has happened than just the deletion of my Best Sellers box, and I just don't know it yet.

I can live without the damn thing, if truth be told.....but I would just like to know WHY it's gone...and if it CAN be fixed....then please tell me HOW.

if you set your products ordered to zero, they are not sold and as such can never be bestsellers and as such don't show in the box. If there are no products sold, the box will not show, it is that simple

Malarkey! I have several items in my database showing as 'sold' at a quantity of one. My Best Sellers box disappeared when changing the three that specifically were showing to a sold status of zero.

The very first one I changed to zero resulted in my Best Sellers box dropping from 3 items showing, to two. It did NOT pick up any other inventory that has been sold. Then I changed the remaining two to a status of zero.....and my Best Sellers box is gone.

Sorry to be huffy and crappy about it, but, I'm not making this up! I have several other items in that database with a sold status of 1 and not ONE of them has shown up to replace the ones I reset to zero. Essentially, changing the three that were showing has resulted in the loss of the Best Sellers box, period.

I know you are not making this up, I also know you don't know what you are doing.

The bestsellers box works on the products_ordered field in the products table.

If a product has that value higher than 0 and it is not disabled via the products_status field, it will show (if it is in the category you are viewing because the box is category dependant). So set the products_ordered field to 1 or 2 or whatever and enable the product by setting the status field to 1.

I have several items in the database where the product ordered field is one, if not two. And I still have no Best Sellers box.

I'm in phpmyadmin right now......I clicked on Products....then I click to Browse those products....all 302 of them....I have several items sitting with a Products_Ordered status of 1, some 2.

But, THANK YOU for showing up. The status field on those items is sitting at a big whopping ZERO. So, I've changed them to 1. Every time I change the status to 1, and click Save, I get a big 'page cannot be found' error. Time to write my webhost...again.

If this IS the problem, then surely you can understand why I'm upset. All I was told to do was change the product_ordered field from whatever to 0 and that would do it. Obviously, that's not enough.

I'll post again and follow up if I can get this fixed.

depends a little on what you want to allow.

if you have subtract stock and check stock enabled and checkout without stock set to false, then whenever someone orders that product, the stock quantity is lowered by the order amount. If that stock goes to 0, the checkout process automatically disables the product (status -> 0) and it will not show anymore, anywhere.

if you allow checkout without sufficient stock it will not do that. However, for unique items that is not a good solution.

Personally, I never let osc disable products. I just took that code out.

I simply indicated sold out by setting the product quantity to -1 and changed all the relevant queries to that.

by the way, you can also enable those products via admin ofcourse.

And be aware of the min & max display settings.

Read your post again. Let the techno-speak hit you in the head. LOL.

I can appreciate there are lots of you up here that speak in a foreign language.....PHP experts and whatnot.

But, please appreciate that a whole lot of us do NOT speak the same language!

I'm a powerseller on eBay and with eBay's newly announced fee increases, the message boards are lit up with people looking for a webhost and some store software...trying to build a business outside and independent of eBay. I've recommended OSC more than a few times and I always get the same reply......

It's too difficult. It's too complicated. It's not user-friendly. OSC looks like a nightmare.

Well.....I do try to emphasize, heavily, the fact that it's FREE, but....

I just want to make the point that not everyone is an OSC expert. And I do not enjoy asking for help on this board, because there's always someone lurking and waiting to 'show me' what a moron they think I am.

Honestly, if this software weren't free of charge......given some of the crappy, rude remarks I've taken just for asking a simple question.....I would have walked away from OSC weeks ago.

"I also know you do not know what you are doing'.....that pretty much covers it, huh, Boxtel? I don't know why you can't just guide me and answer my question.

This software IS complicated. This is NOT an easy software application to use. So...don't make it any harder for me than it already is.

You may have pointed out something. Something the other guy in his 'advice' post failed to mention. But, please quit expecting everyone to be PHP experts and OSC savvy. This is a whole new ballgame for more people than you know.

My webhost just wrote me back wanting specifics on what web browser I'm using. LOL. I hope you're right, Boxtel....I hope that I can somehow manage to change those status settings in phpmyadmin and magically have my Best Sellers box appear again. If not...you'll see me around on Sunday.

I don't expect anybody to be an expert, but if they acknowledge that themselves, I do expect them not to simply change data directly in the database or alter code they know they don't understand and then react frantically on this forum that it does not work anymore, make assumptions/presumptions/judgements while not even grasping the basic logic (not the php/msql/apache, just the logic) of the application.

And say yourself, did you know what you were doing ?

Here we go again. Read your own post. Superior, holier than thou OSC expert that you think you are.

Must be nice to feel all knowing.

Still have yet to see if you are.

Grasp the logic of the application? Yes, you're deep.

In case you forgot, I did what I did based on seemingly good information provided by one of OSC's posters. I didn't see you or anyone else jump to dispute his advice.

Get over yourself. Websites are no longer held by computer geeks.....your mother and your dumb-ass friend down the street have one. I don't think it's too much to ask a question and get a friendly, to-the-point reply. The operative word being FRIENDLY.

Why do you lurk on this board? Just to make mincemeat out of newbies like me? Perhaps you and your friends like you on this board should create a chat room....called 'I Don't Want To Be Bothered With Your Stupid Questions'. No one ever posts......and you can be happy, because....you aren't being BOTHERED.

No one can accuse me of not searching my butt off thru these forums before asking a question.....surely, OSC knows that. Keeps track of what I do here. Shame I had to end up with a jerk like you.

This software IS complicated.  This is NOT an easy software application to use.  So...don't make it any harder for me than it already is.

Yes, it is (sometimes) complicated, but the problem with many people is that they pick up OSC and think / expect / nay, DEMAND that it works out of the box and is exactly the way they want. I don't think you come under this category.

Some people (including the above) expect to be able to change it at will without any of the following skills :

1) How to code in PHP

2) Loads of other web admin stuff (take your pick)

And I think you DO come under this category.

...and it just isn't like that. Many people seem to think they can (say) pick up a contribution, apply the changes and BANG ! - It will just 'WORK' ! And they get very upset when it doesn't just work, and have absolutely no idea why or how to fix it. Sticking with the example, blindly modifying the code and not really knowing what you are doing is just plain asking for trouble !

And the worse thing of all is the hostility that comes from people who don't know what they are doing.

A classic example was this thread, where I was genuinely trying to help someone who didn't know what they were doing and were heading into a real mess if they carried on as they were...

"I also know you do not know what you are doing'.....that pretty much covers it, huh, Boxtel?  I don't know why you can't just guide me and answer my question.

Well, you don't do you ? I can't speak for Boxtel, but I'm sure he/she (can't remember - sorry Boxtel) wasn't trying to insult you - just stating the truth.

Get over yourself.  Websites are no longer held by computer geeks.....your mother and your dumb-ass friend down the street have one.

Indeed - frightening isn't it ? I hate the thought of going to a web site, and handing over my credit card number to someone who doesn't know what they are doing !!!

...and SO many people don't bother to learn. They know enough to 'get by' but if anything goes wrong they are completely stuffed - you only have to count the number of "HELP, My site has been hacked / is broken" to see the end result.

Hi Andrea,

Please be gentle with me!...

The poster that said that setting products_ordered to zero was correct. It wasn't their fault that your other products had a status of 0 so that they couldn't be shown instead in the bestsellers list (which disappeared as it had nothing to show).

The status of zero is affected by admin stock settings. No it's not easy - it's actually pretty clever and getting to grips with it can be really good for a business. Boxtel was trying to explain this and did a better job than I would've. If you'd asked her about the bits you didn't understand then I'm sure she'd have explained!

I'll have a go too! -- It's almost certain that your zero status is because of admin stock settings inappropriate for your situation. In which case setting them in phpmyadmin won't help as they'll be reset to zero pretty quickly again. Look thoroughly round your admin screen stock settings in conjunction with reading the Knowledge Base.

I hope that helps!

Anna

Boxtel: Please don't be put off from trying to help answer people's problems - I guess puggybelle was having a bad day. I'm scared of the day (which is surely coming) when the people trying to help just give up!

I'm the "someone" who gave the original tip about the products_ordered field. Andrea, I'm sorry that this has caused you stress. However, to my knowledge there is no easier way to reset Bestsellers. What can I say to you? If you really can't figure out what happened, the standard procedure is to revert to a recent backup (you do have one, right?). But since you are apparently not even seeing an error message, I suspect that this is something relatively trivial, and you will find the solution.

Boxtel has helped a lot of people (self included) around here and does not deserve the unwarranted abuse she received.

sorry I could help.

Hi I would like to thank you because I was having trouble understanding why items sold were not showing up in my best sellers.

After reading you reply I understood that if an item had been sold but was now out of stock and in the Categories / Products status then it wouldn't show up in the best sellers box)

so I went into admin and into catalog and into the relevant catergory and changed the status of the item that was sold from out of stock to in stock but with a quantity of 0 and now they show up in the best sellers box

I also made sure that in the configuration for stock I have was set as below:

Check stock level true

Subtract stock true

Allow Checkout false

Mark product out of stock stock level too low

Stock Re-order level 1

and now my best sellers works just fine so thank you very much and I hope my post might help others that don't understand php or have trouble following some instructions.
