Deciding on osCommerce

Due to my not finding any online documentation, I'm undecided on osCommerce or not.

I've got a website template, however it isn't hosted yet. I'm looking for shopping basket software, currently to work with Nochex (as osc does), but I'm trying to get information on how easy it is to integrate with a current template (ie is it as easy as a simple easy-to-insert-link wrapped around a cart button), and will it email me the order upon checkout, or do I need to implement my own form for the order to be emailed to me?

When I integrate it into nochex, is this process clearly documented?

I know I can download osc, but I really want to avoid it at the minute. 2 reasons, firstly my hosting package - as yet I'm undecided where I will host my site, and therefore don't know what platform I'll be using, secondly, I could install a web server on my own computer and test it, but I'm not sure how easy it will be to just port all the configurations to my hosted site when the time comes.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Many thanks,

Damo.

The online documentation is a bit sparse, I'll admit - but it's growing all the time. At the top of this screen is a link to the documentation that is currently available.

osCommerce does not currently support templating in the manner you're describing. You really have to have a somewhat working knowledge of HTML and PHP to do much customization. The next version is said to have a templating system but I haven't checked it out. You can choose whether or not you would like to receive emails for each order.

You can download osCommerce right now, the two packages are the same files just packaged differently. Download the package for the operating system on your personal computer.

If you have the knowledge and skills to set up a webserver on your computer for testing, it will be very easy for you to port your installation to a hosted server. The configuration files are not difficult to understand for someone with a general knowledge of how web servers and PHP function.

Hope this helps you out!

Hi,

There are also available 2 template systems in the contribution sections which can be added to oscommerce 2.2, see links for info...

1. Bts Template System

2. STS - Template System
