Dynamic Items

I'm starting a custom computer business using OSCommerce. I would like to give the user a wide range of choices. Rather than create 300 items for each and every combination of PC, is there a way to use just a few items and let the user pick features, then dynamically update the price and add the featureset in the comments box of the order form? I know this is a lot and probaby really complex, but I would really like to do it this way instead of having subcategories for every item, giving about 300 different items total. Similar systems are used in the alienware.com and apple.com stores.
