mark27uk3 Posted January 20, 2005 Posted January 20, 2005 Hi Guys, Please review my site and give me your criticisms and thoughts. Please dont mention that it looks a bit stock as that is the way I have finally decided to leave it. I have been officially taking orders since the 1st November 04 and I managed 99 completed sales and 1 fraudulant one before xmas (I am quite pleased with that). So here it is My Webpage Thanks Mark :-" Lifes a bitch, then you marry one, then you die!
mark27uk3 Posted January 23, 2005 Author Posted January 23, 2005 I guess everything must be alright then since no one has replied to my post. Jack_mcs Posted January 23, 2005 Posted January 23, 2005 I think you've done a good job on it FWIW. There are only a few suggestions I can think of: - The site is too wide. It doesn't display in an 800x600 screen. - The titles are fixed (all the same). Each page should have unique titles for the SE's. Installing Header Tags will fix this. - The gray infobox headings don't go well with the yellow. Good luck with your site. If you are already doing that much business, it sounds like you have will have a successful shop. :) Jack Support Links: For Hire: Contact me for anything you need help with for your shop: upgrading, hosting, repairs, code written, etc. All of My Addons Get the latest versions of my addons Recommended SEO Addons
PartyMania Posted January 23, 2005 Posted January 23, 2005 Site looks great. I'm getting an SSL warning when going to create an account/checkout for some reason. A few of your categories don't have any products in them at all. Why is this? Add products or get a contribution to turn the category off maybe? Your top banner is broked btw. Opens another page and I get a parse error. But anyway your site looks great! Congrats on your success!
Guest Posted January 23, 2005 Posted January 23, 2005 as you said, stock but it does work. -I like that your site is 1024 wide.... -not sure if its network lag or not but some of you pictures often do not come up. refreshing a few times brings them up. Not sure if you are on a slow server. -in product listings, I would suggest emphaszing the product name. right now its identical to the product description. -when clicking to enlarge a products picture, the popwindow is too small and some of the information is cropped. I use Firefox. You can adjust some of the parameters to your liking in the popWindow javascript function.
mark27uk3 Posted January 23, 2005 Author Posted January 23, 2005 Thanks for all the good comments so far, I think a bit of praise is good for moral after all the long days and nights. Jack_mcs - Any ideas on what I need to do to make the site compatible with 800x600 res. Also I thought the grey and orange worked quite well together. It would be interesting to hear what other people think of it. Can you tell me which pages dont have titles on as I have the header tags controller installed, I think I might have missed a couple of pages. PartyMania - The SSL warning was caused by my external links, it should all be sorted now (hopefully) The broken banner has something to do with the links manager contrib that I use and in particular the bit I inserted into the redirect.php. I have no idea how to solve it and have had no reply in any posts about it. Carrerarod - I will have to have a word with my host, I have never had this problem before. The product listings were changed just last night with great help from 'carine bruyndoncx' and I have yet to style it correctly. I also use firefox and I have changed the size of the popup window. Keep them coming guys as this is what I need to know. Thanks Mark Lifes a bitch, then you marry one, then you die!

Mark <{POST_SNAPBACK}> To make the site fit on a an 800x600 screen (which should be done since that it what most people use), you need to surround the site with a table (or div for css fans) and set the width to 800 (I prefer 790). There are many examples of how to do this if oyu search for Center Shop or there are a couple of center shop contribtuions that don't take long to install or if you have the latest versionof the PageMaker contribtution, it has an option to install the change for you. For color schemes, I always use a site like this ine to get an idea. As for the titles, all of them except for the product pages. I didn't check to see if oyu had HTC installed already but I see now that you do. It is just not set up correctly. The title should be unique for each page and lead with your chosen keyword for that page. Most of yours either start off with Mobil Phone or the url (which does you very little, if any, good at all). radders Posted January 23, 2005 Posted January 23, 2005 I do like your site. You do everything possible to reassure the customer and the colours look clear and professional. Just one typo I noticed ' your statutory rights will not be effected'. Create account: You need more space for the address. eg. for people living in flats or in areas where the post sometimes goes astray - eg. side entrance. You say on the create account page that you don't give the address to anyone then elsewhere you say you give it to your dropshipper. Good luck with the business!
radders Posted January 23, 2005 Posted January 23, 2005 One thing that puzzled me was that in your header you say you carry large stocks and elsewhere you say you use a dropshipper. I am being pernickerty but do you really carry large stocks? It sounds rather risky in your business.

I was wondering if you could tell me how you moved the search function to the top like that. Thanks.
mark27uk3 Posted January 24, 2005 Author Posted January 24, 2005 Hi Guys, I have done a few updates for you to have a look at. Jack_mcs - I have installed the 'fixed width using css' contrib but still have a little bit of side ways scroll. If you can have a look and tell me what you think is causing the problem. I am still not sure as to why the headertags controller is not working correctly. radders - I fixed the dozy typo (late night typing is no good for you) Both myself and my suppliers carry large stocks, the problem is with this business is that stocks change daily. FSUddin - Here is the code for the search fields underneath my header, you will probably have to play with it a bit to get it right for your site. This code was not done by me but donated to me by another kind member. <?php // // START advanced search header script insertion // // ?> <?php echo tep_draw_form('advanced_search', tep_href_link(FILENAME_ADVANCED_SEARCH_RESULT, '', 'NONSSL', false), 'GET') ?> <table border="0" width="100%" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" align="center"> <tr> <td height="5"></td> </tr> <tr> <td class="boxtext" valign="middle" width="40%"> <?php if (!stristr(basename($PHP_SELF),'log')) { //echo tep_customer_greeting(); } ?> </td> <td nowrap valign="middle" class="infoBoxContents" align="left"><?php echo BOX_HEADING_SEARCH . RyanSmith Posted January 25, 2005 Posted January 25, 2005 I think that the animated gifs are a little busy, aside from that, not bad. osCommerce is a great piece of software with wonderful contributions. Spend some time in the contribution area. There are a lot of gems there.
mark27uk3 Posted January 25, 2005 Author Posted January 25, 2005 Hi Guys, FSUddin - Insert that code into your includes/header.php RyanSmith - The animated gifs are pulled in from an affiliate site. I am launching a new site soon and the animated gifs will be moved lower down to make way for some advertising. radders - Before I add an extra address field to the create_account page do you think it will affect the way my worldpay module runs? Thanks Mark Lifes a bitch, then you marry one, then you die!
