Need assistance with multiple tax rates in Ohio

I hope someone can shed some light on this problem of mine. I am in Ohio. I need to tax my Ohio customers according to the tax rate in THEIR county. Ohio has 89 counties, with rates from 6.5% to 7.5%. My idea was as follows:

Create a separate zone for all 89 counties: ZONE>United States>OHadams for example. Then create another one for OHallen, OHathens, etc.

Then, create a separate tax zone for all of those newly created zones.

Then create a separate tax rate for all of those newly created tax zone.

OK, I am thinking that when my OH customers sign-up/checkout, they will see all 89 choices of OHadams, OHallen, OHathens, etc for their choic of STATE in the dropdown. They will see their county and pick the right one.

Sound good, workable???

Well, I tried it out with a test account I have for an account in Ohio (OH). It pulled in the tax rate I had set up to test this whole process (which was for OHallen).

Any idea what step I am missing here? Or, is my thought process totally hosed, and maybe this just won't work??

Thanks for ay insight.

Another solution to this (using zip codes to determine the county) for the state New York was recently added to the contributions. Perhaps you can use that if this doesn't work?

I recall someone saying he was building something along the line you mention, but I don't know if he added that to the contributions already.

The problem in Ohio is that the tax will vary based on the delivery address, not by zip code and not by county. Houses that are next door to each other (same county and same zip) can have different tax rates (not to mention the fact that zip codes can cover more than one county and a county can include more than one zip code). There is a bill pending in the legislature to exempt companies with more than $1 million in sales for some period of time to allow them to figure out how to comply. In the meantime, the little guy has no choice as of July 1, 2005. It was supposed to go into effect last year and they delayed it. I hope they do the same again this year (actually, I hope they come to their senses and eliminate it). It is a stupid way to go about trying to place Ohio retailers on equal footing with out-of-state vendors (that's what the Ohio legislature claims it is trying to accomplish).

You said it!! I PRAY they come to their senses! When they delayed it last time, I and many other Ohio retailers were jumping for joy. I was so PO'd when I got the notice that 7-1-05 they were trying it again. Damn!

For me, the easiest solution is to void all Ohio sales unless the buyer comes to me to take delivery. And they wonder why they are broke...............
