How do i process non us $ denominated products

Question for non us based traders.

My products will very largely, but not exclusively, be marketed to the UK.

I have therefore set GBP as my default currency.

However due to the complexity of getting affordable merchant accounts and payment gateways in the UK I have opted to use 2checkout and paypal as my payment acceptance mechanisms. (I have used both previously for another business where my products were denominated in Dollars)

The problem is that these will denominate prices in Dollars and all through the buying process my prices are listed in GBP until they come to the payment gateway when the price is denominated in dollars. - Due to exchange rates this is obviously not right :(

What advice do merchants outside the US and particularly those in the UK suggest I do in terms of getting affordable merchant accounts and payment gateways that will take payment in GBP

Thanks for your thoughts

I can only speak for Paypal as I have never used 2checkout but you can alter your Paypal account so GBP is your primary currency and if needed you can activate EUR and USD also for acceptment without having one of those set primary. If your shop gives GBP to Paypal with GBP as your primary currency over there all should be fine.

Possibly there is a similar setup with 2checkout but you should find that information on their site (or give them an email asking how this can be accomplished).

Thanks for this - in case anyone is following this thread - here is the temporary solution I have arrived at:

In the end I have settled for Nochex which will process CC's and DC's issued in the UK. I have also adjusted Paypal to accept GBP as default. I am also installing many very good contributions as follows

1) Nochex APC by Leigh of leigh_oscATcardiganwebhostingDOTcoDOTuk which prevents the taking of payment from a customer without an order - This would happen if they fail to click on the final button on Nochex.

2) Accept direct bank transfers - probably not many sales will come from this - but make life easy for the customer is my motto

ps - 2checkout will denominate amounts in USD only - it is up to the buyer to translate the amount into their home currency from the 2checkout site. Hence selling something for GBP 10 will appear as USD 10 on 2 checkout and when they click on the GBP flag depending on xchange rate it will come out as less than you intended to sell at - Not good ! I think there are a few contributions in here somewhere but I am not good enough (yet) to create them

I really dont see the issue, If you build the site with where you have priced in USD, to GBP I know there is a flux in the exchange rates. I would say the easy way to do it was to:

Admin and update currency in USD's After admining, Switch the cart to GBP, this should effectively work.

Remember, Import tax in the UK is charged at 17.5% so this charge should be applied to all transactions, You may wish to add 1 or 2% to cover handling charges such as currency convertions and bankers charges. here is some reading and from this link you should be able to find more info on the import X export law as well as the trading laws we have over here.

The problem is this

The 2CO module appears not to recognise the currency being sent to 2CO only the amount. Therefore if I denominate something as gbp 10 (approx usd 18) when the customer gets to the 2co site he will see that he is being charged usd 10 not usd 18 !!!!

If I were to state all my prices as gbp 18 in order that when they get to 2co the routine shows usd 18 - then my prices would have risen immediately by a factor of 1.8 - so I price myself out of the UK market which is where I really want to be.

Also I noticed that if i leave my prices as gbp 10, but use the osC convertor to show prices in usd - when i get to 2CO and return to my own site the module produces a heap of error messages - which I have not had the time to analyse let alone attempt to fix. In this case the order was not fed through.

Clear as mud - I think there must be a contribution in here waiting to be discovered - but my PHP is just not up to the mark so unless someone else can fix this or tell me what my error is - I will stick with nochex, paypal, and snail mail payments.
