SSL Certificated & Authorize.net

Well I am going to purchase an ssl certificate. I have my oscommerce site setup at http://store.mydomain.com , and my main page is http://www.mydomain.com. Am I correct to purchase the certificate for the store.mydomain.com?? Also once this is purchased how would I secure just the payment portion of the site, or do I have to secure the whole oscommerce site? I have heard the SSL slows down the page a bit, and I would like to keep the non-payment portions as fast as possible

Once you have your certificate installed you set ssl to true in your two configure.php files and enter in your secure paths and osC will automatcally switch from secure to non secure as needed.
