configure.php access forbidden

Hi all,

I'm in the process of installing osCommerce and have managed to get most of the way without any hitches. However, the INSTALL docs mention viewing the /catalog/includes/configure.php file to make the 'necessary changes'.

The problem I have is that I'm getting a standard Forbidden message when I try to access the page. I've changed the CH MOD value to 444 to get rid of the error message at the head of the catalog home page which sorted that little problem but I'm still unable to get into configure.php.

Even set at 777 I'm still getting the same message telling me I don't have permission to access the page.

I've checked the Knowledge Base and run a search through this forum but haven't been able to find anything so if anyone can shed any light on this I'd be most grateful.

Many thanks in advance.

During the install you should be at 777, make sure that your permissions are actually changing. If not you should contact your hosting company and see if they can help.

If you are on a windows server you most likely are not able to change permissions.

The Knowledge Base is a wonderful thing.

Do you have a problem? Have you checked out Common Problems?

There are many very useful osC Contributions

Are you having trouble with a installed contribution? Have you checked out the support thread found Here

BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP!!! You did backup, right??

thanks ozcsys, much appreciated, but I think may just be a case of me being schtoopid? - not unknown ;)

I think I may be reading the instruction to 'view' the configure.php file the wrong way! is this intended to be viewed through the browser or an editor?

thanks again.

If you are on a Linux/Unix server then ftp to your site, locate the file, right click, follow Operations --> FTP Commands --> CHMOD (Unix) and set the permissions. Then download the file, edit in a plain text editor like Notepad, upload again, reset the permissions. Always take a backup before editing files, and don't use the osCommerce File Manager to edit files.
