Installing SSL?

Hi,

I just bought SSL from my hosting co, ?45 pa seems well worth the money.

I have a couple of questions though, if it helps I'm using Ipswitch WS_FTP LE.

My url: www.xyz123.com

SSL: https://vault2.secured-url.com/zyz123

In Ipswitch I see a structure like this in the root:

-----------------

xyz123.com > htdocs > catalog

SSL Folder (xyz123) > cgi-bin

---------

THis is a fresh install and I checked that SSL would be used and the install went very smoothly.

Now what do I do to get SSL working for OSC?

I want to make the shop sit in my .com rather than in catalog, should I make that change first?

Do I need to buy a certificate separately? Do I get that from my host or a third party?

Sorry if this is easy but I checked the Knowledge base and couldn't find the answer.

Thx.

Provided that the certificate you bought was for www.xyz.com you can use it anywhere on your site. You would not have been able to buy it for www.xyz.com/catalog anyway.

Unfortunately though your hosting provider seems to have one of those stupid systems where you have a seperate folder for ssl. In this case you will probably have to copy over all of your website files to the ssl folder for your site to work properly. You will also need to keep the two in sync.

It is definitely a good idea to have your site in the root directory rather than in a 'catalog' folder. You'll need to download all of the files, upload them into the root directory, then change both of the configure.php files by taking out the references to 'catalog'. It should then work in the root directory. Once you've done that and checked it out then you can proceed to delete the 'catalog' folder.

Thanks for the info.

Does this mean that I have to copy ALL of the site over and keep it synchronised?

So everytime I make any change at all I have to duplicate to the SSL copy? This sounds like a complete nightmare! :'(

Yes that is what it means and yes if you make many changes to your site it will be.

The Knowledge Base is a wonderful thing.

Do you have a problem? Have you checked out Common Problems?

There are many very useful osC Contributions

Are you having trouble with a installed contribution? Have you checked out the support thread found Here

BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP!!! You did backup, right??

OMG.

What about stock changes, changes in admin eg. changing shipping costs or something?

Design issues I could live with by doing the design then copying over, but any changes like the ones I mention become a serious issue.

Thanks for the info provided so far chaps.

Sorry, but you will have to keep everything synchronised. And the only reason you have to do this is because the server you are on is set up in a totally unnecessary way.

As long as your files are synchronized you should be fine. It is not an ideal situation but changes in the DB are automatically reflected on both sides so admin changes should be of no worry. I guess when you are finished with contributions and design you hardly have to synchronize anymore but you should never forget to do it twice when there is a change in one of your catalog files.
