Guest Posted January 10, 2005 Posted January 10, 2005 I haven't setup a shopping cart in a while, can anyone with a depth of experience help me out here? Besides OScommerce, the hosting account, etc. What is generally required? - Static IP and Certificate from issuing authority for secure server - Business bank account - Merchant account at something like Authorize.net Anyone have any advice about any of those elements, and the general cost these days? How does everyone feel about the alternatives to Authorize.net? What do certificates cost, about 100 bucks per year, right? Thanks in advance....
hel8itch Posted January 11, 2005 Posted January 11, 2005 erm..i didnt pay for my certificate..it was auto generated by my host.dont know if everyones is like that. static ip also doesnt matter if its hosted by a company as they deal with that side of things, and i also dont have a business bank account.i use paypal for my online shop and people can pay with their credit cards etc into that. total cost to me was domain name?4 a year<i think> host and domain server ?10 per year.cheapest and best host i could find that offer loads and loads of addons and stuff meirhosting.

I've got a $49 Geotrust QuickSSL, and I thought that was a good deal--but now I see that EV1Servers is offering StarterSSL for $9.95. Holy moly, that's rock bottom. "StarterSSL is a 128 bit single root SSL certificate. FreeSSL.com owns the root used to issue StarterSSL certificates making it a stable SSL offering. StarterSSL is already present in the IE 5.01+, Netscape 7 and Mozilla 1 browsers. At a very special price of $9.95, StarterSSL is an ideal solution for securing websites conducting lite levels of ecommerce." http://www.ev1servers.net/english/starterssldetails.asp http://www.ev1servers.net/english/quickssldetails.asp *Not affiliated with any of the above-mentioned companies.* "Buy the ticket, take the ride..." -HST
Guest Posted January 11, 2005 Posted January 11, 2005 not all hosts take care of the certificate, but if you want: https://www.yoursite.com you do need a static IP and cert. its different if youre piggybacking off of them, with https://yoursite.somehost.com also, redirecting to another site for payment is pretty unprofessional looking, i think. so paypal is out.

Holy moly, that's rock bottom. it looks like you can do it through them directly (geotrust) and pay 169$ for a lifetime certificate? unless I'm misunderstanding their page: http://www.geotrust.com/web_security/quickssl.htm ? FREE lifetime, self-service reissue Don't understand what the difference between reissue and renew is though.
Guest Posted January 11, 2005 Posted January 11, 2005 oh, I guess you still do need to renew every year. deceptive. i can't imagine needing to reissue an expired certificate.
