matcollins Posted January 9, 2005 Posted January 9, 2005 Hi, I'm in the process of renaming the admin folder to a secret name. I've updated all the links I can see and the admin panel works but for some reason the spiffycalendar won't show up on the categories page. Does anyone know what could be the problem? Thanks Matt
Jordon Posted January 9, 2005 Posted January 9, 2005 Don't to rename admin folder i think, pls use direct password manage for this admin folder. It is useful and be more safe.

It is useful and be more safe. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Taken from the oscommerce install file: Do the same for the 'admin' directory but rename the directory to a unique and secret name. This directory does not have to reside inside the catalog directory, though may need to be manually configured. Just trying to make it as secure as possible. The directory is already protected by .htaccess. Matt

If u have more time , u can double check the config table one by one. do your server have "password protect for directory" in contral panel? I used it and had nothing with .htaccess file. Pls correct handle by server help. Wish all will be useful. Good luck, guy.

Thanks Matt <{POST_SNAPBACK}> When you say that you "updated all the links I can see" exactly what are you talking about? If you went in and actually changed links then 1. you made too much work for yourself and 2. Have caused yourself problems. When changing the name of your admin folder the only file you need to make any changes in is your admin(new name)/includes/configure.php file All you need to do is edit the file and replace the admin in your paths with the new name of your folder. There are only a couple of them so it should only take a minute or so. Once you do that everything should work fine in the new location. The Knowledge Base is a wonderful thing. Do you have a problem? Have you checked out Common Problems? There are many very useful osC Contributions Are you having trouble with a installed contribution? Have you checked out the support thread found Here BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP!!! You did backup, right??

This was because DW had inserted /secretname/includes/ into the links. The only problem I have is the calendar not loading, everything else works fine.

They are all controlled by the two configure.php files. You change the configure.php file so that it contains your new location and all your links will work. I can move a complete store to a new location even a new domain name and just change those two files and every link works correctly, no problems. The Knowledge Base is a wonderful thing. matcollins Posted January 9, 2005 Author Posted January 9, 2005 Ok, I'll try it again as you suggest. Didn't realise the configure file controlled the links. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction, novice as I am. Matt

Matt <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I believe I am correct in saying that if DW has inserted the secret name into the paths in files other than the configure files, if you make further changes to the paths in the configure files the links will be broken until you either change the paths in those other files back to the relative paths that were in there to begin with or change the paths to include the correct secret name.
matcollins Posted January 9, 2005 Author Posted January 9, 2005 Got it working now. Just nuked the folder and started again. Works perfectly, can't believe all the hassle when I just needed to change 1 file. We live and learn. Matt
Guest Posted January 9, 2005 Posted January 9, 2005 sometimes it is best to sit back and really look at what we are trying to accomplish, most things are right in front of us and simple changes

There are only a couple of them so it should only take a minute or so. Once you do that everything should work fine in the new location. I'm in the process of putting everything in it's right place. Renaming the admin folder is important. I need step by step instructions. I've read everything everywhere, I think......... Currently, I go to mydomain.com/oscommerce/admin/ and the page is password protected. I enter the username and password and I'm in the admin portion of the site. (((btw, I'll get to moving the oscommerce folder shortly))) Anyhow, I change the name of the admin folder to my "secretname." (so exciting) I change the configure.php file in secretname/includes/ so that both (only two) of the references to /admin/ are changed to "secretname." I go to mydoman.com/oscommerce/secretname/ . I see the password protect screen comes up just fine, but the username and password do not allow me in. I change everything back the way it was with admin instead of secretname and it works fine. What to do about this????? NEXT PROBLEM................. My virtual apache dedicated server installed oscommerce for me. Just a couple of clicks in the control panel and I was off and running as oscommerce was available on a list of "power tools" I could add to the domain. (and I always thought power tools were impact drills, rotary saws and such) However, it put the oscommerce folder in var/www/html instead of var/www/. Consequently, my site is now viewable at www.mydomain.com/oscommerce/index.php I'm sure there are multiple steps I have to go through - files to find and edit and move and such - in order to get my index page in the right place at mydomain.com/index.php I need to know these multiple steps and files to find and edit and move and such. Any help out there friendly OSC wizards?
