Art in the Village

We've been live for about 3 weeks now. No on-line sales yet. We've promoted heavily to existing retail customers and a bit with google adwords.

Is something wrong? Are we crazy? Please give it a look and see where we need to improve.

Let me have it!

Thank you.

You're in the Google index, so that's a start.

The link at the bottom 'Home' links to the https:// version of your site, which duely brings up a security warning from me that it can't verify the issuer of your certificate.

Why not do an Introductory offer? That's the key thing that hits me, there are no 'Special offers' or clearly discounted items. It's all very well having cheap prices on all your goods, but people expect you to use these techniques, and need to feel they're getting a bargain. Discounts, vouchers, sale items, 5% off first order.

You're also not cross-selling and up-selling. These require OS mods (contributions) but are worth their weight in gold if you can get them installed.

Finally, you need much more prominent 'About us'. It's no good throwing people straight into the products. You need to convince them first that you're a reputable company, and reassure them constantly about your Returns policy ('no quibbles' is good) and speedy, cheap (ideally free) delivery. Make them think you're great and then offer to show them a few products..

And maybe your photos could be bigger and better resolution.

heh. There's nothing massively wrong with it, but the above is what I'd work on while the promotion efforts take time to bring in customers.

Hope this helps,

Thank you very much for the feedback. I've fixed those problems with the link and the wording of our Communications to You section.

I also appreciate the suggestions for cross-selling and up-selling as well as displaying more about our company. I'll be digging into more contibs.

Does the SSL work for everyone? I've noticed a warning on one computer that I tried it on. The SSL cert. provider (Godaddy) and my hosting provider (HostGator) both say its working properly, but I'm still not convinced.

Thank you!

Your SSL Certificate is signed by someone called "starfield secure certification authority". Internet Explorer apparently already trusts this CA to sign certificates, but Firefox does not. This means that non-IE customers are likely to see a warning whenever they first access SSL pages on your site. The cert is working fine, it's just that some browsers aren't pre-configured to "trust" that certificate signer.

FWIW, Your body background, the cream color, doesn't show up at all for me in Firefox. It shows up fine in IE, just not in Firefox.

You may wish to auction some of your items on eBay to generate interest in your site. Be careful of how you do it, though, as eBay doesn't allow most types of advertising for external sites on their site. You could do a "buy it now" and then send auction winners to your checkout or something like that.

Sabre your home page title is 'What's new here?' This is an important SE reference and needs changing to inlcude keywords.

You have made a nice customization, but seem to have run out of steam with the footer!

The introduction is a bit vague for me - I'm not sure what this is about:

"We continue to get new selections of a popular seller --

Dichroic Glass Pendants

by Kim Albert.

Drop in or look online. Add a chain or neck ring from our selection to get a great look. "

Where's the customer benfit and the unique selling point? And if I don't know what a Dichroic Glass Pendant by Kim Albert is - I'm lost.

Hi Sabre,

You have some attractive products once you start exploring the menu. The header looks good. The first page was rather dull though.

Try and simplify.

Ship-in-cart offered me 13 different ways to ship a greetings card to the UK. Most of them were quite ridiculous options. I thought is was nice that you offered to ship stuff to me free but what is super saver? I assume it is sea mail but there was no link when I clicked on it and your shipping page indicated that most things go by air mail.

You have two style of buttons - yellow and blue. Try and stick to one.

That SSL warning is unfortunate. Probably one of these certificates that is accepted by 90% of browsers. Much better to go for one with full acceptance.
