index.php issue

I have done repeated installations of the osCommerce store. Although I do not know how to edit php files, I have been able to accomplish everything I need to do (well most everything) through the admin panel (adding and deleting products, uploading images, etc.) But each time I open the catalog/includes/languages/english/index.php file to make changes, the file seems to become corrupted. Even if I make no change, I have the same problem.

When I opend the store (catalog/index.php) I see the text of the index.php file in it's raw form:

This is a default setup of the osCommerce project...\'); etc.

Instead of the

WHAT'S NEW HERE

Welcome Guest - , etc the usual index page giving instructions on changing the file.

I have used:

define(TEXT_MAIN', 'my new text');

I've tried deleting everything in this file, but that deletes important instruction.

How can I edit this file without corrupting it?

Is this file itself corrupt?

Thanks,

DON'T use the file manager supplied with OSC, there is a bug in it. Edit the files on your PC using Notepad or your favorate text editor and upload them to your server again.

ALWAYS keep a backup copy of any files you change in the event you mess up and have to reload the original copy.

Hope this helps,
