Using Image URL rather than uploading Image

I am currently building a store using a database from a drop shipper. They have provided excellent content and pricing, however they do not provide a file to upload images rather a url link to each product image.

 

I have experimented with changing the image directory in includes/config to point to the image directory on their server but that really wasn't a good solution.

 

I also found a contribution which I felt would do the trick, however it didn't function for me ... perhaps because the mod is primarily written in German and the English translation might have missed something.

 

I would appreciate any suggestions or guidance and I apologize in advance if there was already a post on this topic, but after several hours of reading I just haven't found the answer.
