Order of attributes

Under our product attributes, we used to have sizes be listed in the store that would show up in the order we entered them per item, but for some reason now our sizes are no longer sorted in the order we enter them. We want to start with "please select" then go to size one, two etc. How does oscommerce normally handle this situation, and how can we fix it. thanks
