hello

im only just learning to build websites, im ok with basic layout stuff but anything like shopping carts gives me the shakes!!

I was pointed here from the Macromedia DW Forum after asking about Shopping Carts as ive been asked to add one to a site.

Ive had a read through the first few intro pages to the site and then went through to the dowload section. So here is my first question:

There is only 2 downloads, 1 for Windows and 1 for Linux/Unix. Im working on a Mac on DW4. Is there a download for the mac? or is it the Linux/Unix one?

Also, assuming i will be able to download something to use, is it pretty straight forward to implement in DW? Any tips or do's and donts?

Anything would be really helpfull, thankyou

The files are the same in both versions the difference is the way they are zipped.

The Knowledge Base is a wonderful thing.

Do you have a problem? Have you checked out Common Problems?

There are many very useful osC Contributions

Are you having trouble with a installed contribution? Have you checked out the support thread found Here

BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP!!! You did backup, right??

The older version of Dreamweaver that I have is of marginal use for managing osCommerce and PHP scripts in general (but maybe Macromedia has beefed it up with recent releases, I wouldn't know). You can use DW for quick script editing--although mine does not show the results of code changes--file management, and FTP. But better to rely on decent standalone PHP editor and FTP client. A file comparison utility such as Beyond Compare is also handy.

Ok, so in English that means i cant really use DW4 for this? Im really sorry, i think i need to go and do some reading up. I dont really understand PHP scripts or why i would need standalone editors or file comparison utilities, let alone how im supposed to implement any of this.

Does anyone know the most straight forward way to add a shopping cart to a site on Mac OS9 & DW4?

Forget about DW. I do use it for PHP, but only as a text editor (i like the colors). DW will not display the PHP correctly in the DESIGN view.

Umm, it seems to me you really need to know the server's operating system. Is it mac or is that your home computer? If it's your home puter, it won't matter as long as you can decompress the files in the download and then load them to your server. On your server, you'll need Apache, php and mysql.

So, if you can get a mac based unzipper for zip or tar compressed files, then you should be fine. Failing that, you could get someone to load it to your server, then run the installation. That part is browser based.

oh, yeah. i meant to mention that DW can be helpful on a few files that have tables but mostly you'll need a text editor. I've heard there are better editors out there, too.
