When i set up my cart to Use Search Engine Safe URL's = True

(i.e. Admin - Configuration - My Store - Use Search Engine Safe URL's = True)

I get a nasty error message when trying to access the 'website'/catalog URL. It says:

Error!

Unable to determine the page link!

What causes this error, and how can I make my URL's more search engine friendly without the error?

I'd like to get my site set up, but I understand how SEO is so important if you really want to get noticed. If an expert can voluneer email/telephone support, I'll gladly pay for it!! I seem to be going around in circles here and I'm stuck with my very amateur existing shopping cart!

Chris - that option causes problems. I've seen a few members say they use it without a problem, but the majority who try it have problems. I would recommend you not using it. As for SEO, there are a number of options you can try. Search the forum for SEO and you will find a large number of them.

I thought this was still in develpment and that it shouldn't be used yet. Am i wrong?

It does indeed say 'still in development' next to the option, although it obviously works with other people.

I just spoke to someone with experience on the phone and apparently the error is most likely caused by a PHP setting on my server. He'll find out what it is and get my host to change it.

Just remeber to test it well. It may appear to work and then get you later on. Considering that it is not needed at all and its known problems, I would question the wisdom of even trying.

Is this option neccessary for Froogle to work?

Posted

Apparently the option just makes the URL's appear to be static URL's to robots/spiders, so I would imagine it would affect froogle....However, someone told me there are other ways to make static appearing URL's in osC.

Hopefully he'll show me soon, as I won't even consider going live if no ones going to find me. I'd rather stay with my current shopping cart arrangement as it uses basic HTML and ranks pretty well.

You don't need to make any changes for the SE's to find you. Well, not the kind of changes you are talking about. You still need to do basic SEO things like setting up the title and meta tags. But sites list fine, and high, with no changes to the url string.
