adam71o Posted January 3, 2005 Posted January 3, 2005 I'm a total n00b to OSC. My family business just started using it and I'd like to duplicate this site's OSC design..... http://www.oscommerce.com/shops/goto,2292 Are there pre-installed templates anywhere? Or must I customize this all by hand? I saw a "tool" to customize stuff but I could not find a download link, only "readme" links. Thanks in advance!
rstevenson Posted January 3, 2005 Posted January 3, 2005 Are there pre-installed templates anywhere? Or must I customize this all by hand? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Go to the Contributions section of this site, click on Templates/Themes and have a look around. Somewhere in there are links to various providers of full theme packages for osc - including some free ones. HTH Rob
Guest Posted January 3, 2005 Posted January 3, 2005 If you want a preinstalled osCommerce template. You'll have to buy it from other web sites. Unfortunately I can't give a recommendation, because it is against the rules of this forum. You best bet is to search the web. Good luck!
adam71o Posted January 3, 2005 Author Posted January 3, 2005 I've downloaded one that I really like. Its the "blue" version of this one... http://www.oscommerce.com/community/contri...ons,2577/page,2 Will installing this template (overwriting the "catalog" folder on my server, with the "catalog" folder included in this template) overwrite/discard ANY of my current products or other settings, besides aesthetics?
Guest Posted January 3, 2005 Posted January 3, 2005 Yes, you have to overwrite the existing catalog files. Installing a template will not effect your database and other non-graphic configurations. In any case. You must BACKUP before making any major changes to your store. Enjoy!
adam71o Posted January 3, 2005 Author Posted January 3, 2005 Ok, so right now I'm backing up my entire "catalog" folder on my local machine, is that all I should backup, just to be able to upload that and have everything back as it was (in case of a problem)?
Guest Posted January 3, 2005 Posted January 3, 2005 There are essentially 2 different backups that you have to do. 1. Files backup: Backup the entire catalog folder. 2. Database backup: Every osCommerce users must learn this as well. Go to http://www.oscommerce.info/kb/osCommerce/A..._Tool/Tools/175 or search this forum for more info.
adam71o Posted January 4, 2005 Author Posted January 4, 2005 I downloaded a template. When I installed it I noticed that it had google ads at the bottom. Can I remove that somehow (if so, how?)? Or is that how the template maker makes their money?
burt Posted January 4, 2005 Posted January 4, 2005 I downloaded a template. When I installed it I noticed that it had google ads at the bottom. Can I remove that somehow (if so, how?)? Or is that how the template maker makes their money? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> That's against Google Rules, as the pages that show the Ads must be under the control of the Adsense account owner. Obviously as your hosting account is yours (I assume!), you need to remove these in order to save potential trouble from Google for both yourself and the Adsense account owner. hth
adam71o Posted January 4, 2005 Author Posted January 4, 2005 Now, how exactly do I remove them? I mean, as far as I understand, I cannot just open osc up in dreamweaver and delete that cell. Is there a google ad module for osc that I need to disable or something?
burt Posted January 4, 2005 Posted January 4, 2005 I believe you should be able to remove these by amending /includes/languages/english/index.php
adam71o Posted January 4, 2005 Author Posted January 4, 2005 What are all the "programs" and where do you download them? ....MS2, STS, etc... ? ....I believe MS2 is just the latest "version" of OSC?
adam71o Posted January 4, 2005 Author Posted January 4, 2005 Also, how do I find out what version of OSC I am using? (i.e. MS2 or earlier)
Guest Posted January 5, 2005 Posted January 5, 2005 What are all the "programs" and where do you download them? ....MS2, STS, etc... ? ....I believe MS2 is just the latest "version" of OSC? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yep, MS2 is the latest version and MS3 shold be out later of sooner this year (hopefully). LOL Go to Contributions to get other free add-ons.
