teamturbo Posted January 3, 2005 Posted January 3, 2005 Hello guys. Before I get started, I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Mike and I just found out about osCommerce. I currently run a business; but it's not very professional. I use a site builder (citymax.com) to run and administrate my site. However, there is only so much I'm able to do with this 'advanced' site builder. Here is the knowledge I have in computers: I know how to generally run a PC I have some very basic knowledge of C++ & Java I know a few lines of HTML These are my goals: Learn how to operate osCommerce Learn how to operate PHP.Nuke From the limited research I've conducted, I've noticed that these 2 operating 'systems' seem popular both through support and written subjects. This is what I want to know: What is THE BEST sources to learn these? I don't want ANYTHING complex, just very broad. Just kind of 'skim the water'. Remember, I know very little coding, etc. I want something so simple it would be considered material for the (pardin my language) 'retarded'. I did an amazon search for OScommerce and it came up with this eye catching newbie book: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detai...=books&n=507846 Also, I did another search of PHP.Nuke and came up with an unreleased book which also sounds excellent: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-h...ywords=PHP.Nuke Also, how important is learning HTML and does anyone recommend a novice book? Thanks and I look forward to your replies! Mike.
SunnyWales Posted January 3, 2005 Posted January 3, 2005 Hiya Mike. I can see where you're coming from but I think you're looking too hard! I had no knowledge of HTML, PHP or any other computer language when I started my shop last month. I downloaded the software on 6 December and my shop was up and running on 1 Jan Spread a Little Sunshine. I found the information in the forum and knowledge base was brilliant! I'm not saying that the shop is brilliant, but I think it's fantastic considering my last site was just HTML with buttons added for PayPAl. It looks much more professional now. Best of luck in your venture! Wendy Wendy Go on spread some sunshine!
Iggy Posted January 3, 2005 Posted January 3, 2005 Yeah, jump right in. Learn as you go. Read the knowledgebase. Read the forums. Experiment. http://www.webmonkey.com still has some seminal tutorials available for just about everything. Oh, and skip phpNuke. Give http://www.mamboserver.com a shot instead. Much nicer and you won't have to update some file every other day to keep the script kiddies out. Iggy Everything's funny but nothing's a joke...
