amahmood Posted January 2, 2005 Posted January 2, 2005 I am trying to activate SSL. my host says that I need to buy a "security certificate" and a "dedicated IP". On some tutorials I have read that I just need to buy a "private and public key". Some pals on froums say that I can get them for free. Some say I can use Shared SSL ... Can somebody help me out of this confusion. I'd appreciate if somebody give me a step by step guide to this. at the moment I need SSL for experience. Is it possible to get it all for free somewhere?
stevel Posted January 3, 2005 Posted January 3, 2005 I am not aware of a source for free SSL certificates. They can be had cheaply - the registrar I use frequently offers them for $15.99/year. But the owners of this forum don't like people making recommendations for services - send me a PM if you're interested. Some hosts offer free shared SSL - my host does, and that's what I use. With shared SSL, the SSL certificate is in the name of the host so your secure URLs have the host's domain name in them. If this really bothers you, then you won't want to use that. As you found, many hosts, especially the smaller ones, will require you to pay for a dedicated IP in order to allow installation of your own SSL certificate. There exist hosts who don't have this requirement - they tend to be the larger shops that can afford to invest in infrastructure.
