Restricting Access to Administrative Tool

Hi:

Now, I got osCommerce installed in my web server. Before, I start adding my products, it would be a best thing to restrict access to administrative tool only to authorized persons. How can I accomplish that?

I would appreciate any suggestion.

Thanks

1. Rename your admin folder.

2. Protect your admin folder with a UN and PW.

3. Use SSL.

4. Make regular backups.

I might need to update the links when I rename the folder. Won't I?

Thanks

Yes. Start with the easy stuff, like the UN and PW. Be sure to check it every day, because sometimes UN and PW protection mysteriously disappears.

That already happened. It asked for password for the first time I added username and password for the folder. Then, it never asked even after I cleared the cache and cookies from my machine. Renaming folder and even updating all links automatically through DreamWeaver produced error. There are links defined in PHP code which DreamWeaver doesn't update.

My experience with Dreamweaver is that it updates the links but adds an extra "../" and "includes/" to the string. You have to manually remove those before things work agian. I find it easier to update links using the Find and Replace feature. Personally, I think it is worth the effort.
