File edit in Web Server vs. Local Machine

Hi:

I installed the osCommerce in webserver after I failed to install it in my local machine. Now, I need to start customizing it for the site that I want. How should I start it? Do I have to download the installed files for editing in my local machine or can I just edit the files that I unzipped in catalog folder under htdocs?

I am just wondering how much change does installation makes in files since I don't want to screw up once installed files since I sweat couple of days trying to install in local machine.

I will appreciate the answer.

Thanks

as long as you havent changed any files on the server, you can edit the files locally then ftp them to the server.

the only changes different between server files and local files are the two configure.php files, in the catalog/includes and catalog/admin/includes

Do not forget to backup any files you plan on changing!!!

The Knowledge Base is a wonderful thing.

Do you have a problem? Have you checked out Common Problems?

There are many very useful osC Contributions

Are you having trouble with a installed contribution? Have you checked out the support thread found Here

BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP!!! You did backup, right??

If you still want another attempt at installing osCommerce on your local machine, then try www.easyphp.org.

Thank you for the suggestions. I can't find the link for osCommerce in easyphp.org. I would appreciate if you could give me the exact link.

Thanks

I've just installed it locally successfully, mysql, php apache 2 with ssl, I tested oscommerce set and it worked, although it's only for testing I have to use the username root for the mysql connection but have it blocked from public access in my firewall, if youre wanting to set testing locally, which you should because it's so much more easy take a look at http://sourceforge.net/projects/webserv/

This one actually works

It seems like a separate web server with php, mysql, apache and others - all in one. I had installed php mysql and apache separately. Is this the alternative way of all of this?

Thanks

EasyPHP, WebServ, Abriasoft Merlin Server and many others allow you to quickly achieve WAMP setup on your computer. Every single one of them work perfectly with osCommerce. And no, they don't come with osCommerce.

You can set up WAMP yourself if you want, it will allow you to learn more about what's going on behind the curtains.

How did you fail? What went wrong?

Remember, I had posited my configure.php and you responded to it. It just never got the paths right. It imported database and it said the configuration was successful. Then, when I clicked on catalog or administration tool button it always said that 'you are not authorized to view this page'. After fixing the paths manually, administration tool page worked but catalog didn't. I tried for many times and gave up. Then, I had ftpd the files to server and installed it there.

I installed webserv as suggested by one of the member but that seems to have introduced another problem for me. There is no php.ini in Windows folder anymore. It has moved the file to its own folder. I previosly had PHP. But, I gave a try for webserv hoping to be able to install osc in local machine. It asked me to turn register_globals on which I did and restarted Apache. It doesn't detect the changes at all and asks still the same thing. Don't know what to do now. :D

I'll try other options you have suggested one by one. I am just concerned it might be ruining what is already installed in my machine.

Please, don't try to install them all at once. Pick one and stick to it.

The one I'm using at the moment is EasyPHP. Many people in this forum use it, so I decided to join in.

I think that Merlin might not be the best option for you at the moment, unless you really want SSL on your local computer. (you'll need quit a bit of knowledge to configure this as well, not really worth the trouble at this point).

For some reason the configuration files that you've posted here recently contain some very strange settings.

Some parts of the 2 files suggest that they came from a web host, some other parts suggest that they came from you local machine.

Were those files from installation on a web host or your local machine?

They were in local machine. The paths that looked like from web has a reason. I had downloaded the files with full path from the web where I had stored these files few months back.

osCommerce came to my attection while I was trying to see shopping cart code online on PHP. Since I got the suggestion to install webserv when I was not able to make osc work with my setup I thought it might be worth a try.
