One credit card account for two stores?

I have two OSC stores and have been accepting payments through PayPal because I had been getting just a few orders a month and couldn't justify the expense of a merchant account. One site is now doing much better and I want to be able to accept credit cards through a merchant account. Does anyone know if there is a way to use one merchant account for both stores? I didn't want to sign up for a separate merchant account for the store that isn't doing as much business. I've tried thinking through this process and couldn't figure out how I could make it work, but there are people out there much more knowledgeable than I am.

If you're the same business with just two separate stores, it isn't a problem. If they are separate business entities, your merch acc provider would need to set up two accounts and two gateways. With the first scenario, the issue is the reporting back to the correct store from your gateway to confirm the purchase. I use Authorize.net and the setup with OSC was flawless. The reporting is complete but I think it is hard coded at my gateway and can't do two stores. They will let me manually enter orders, though. You could do that for the second store while the first one uses the gateway through OSC. They even have a batch upload feature through the manual entry interface. I've never tried it but it sounds much better than entering one at a time.

With an online merchant card processing account you normally specify a return url, have to install some files in the cgi bin, and use a dedicated key etc. If the people you are thinking of going to need you to specify a particular return url then that may mean once account for just one site - but check it out with them.

It can be done. I'm doing it. As long as you can specify more than one response/receipt URL you can do it.
