New install Step 7 failure. (Config Create)

Hi all,

My problem: I set up latest CVS package on WinXP machine. Configured it, CSS'd it. Added some brilliant contribs then showed it to some friends to see if thats what they wanted and recieved a 'Yes'.

I copied to my prod server FreeBSD/apache/mysql/php latest stable(trusted) versions then copied DB over. Then hit prod URL and it asks me to install. So i bak up. And start fresh figuring to copy changed stuff over later.

I start install and the DB was created successfully and ive visually varified its existance. Then I get upto 'install/install.php?step=7' and it tells me the following error

New Installation

osCommerce Configuration

The following error has occurred:

The configuration files do not exist, or permission levels are not set.

Please perform the following actions:

cd /usr/local/apache/htdocs/dmix.widestream.com.au/dmix/catalog/includes/

touch configure.php

chmod 706 configure.php

cd /usr/local/apache/htdocs/dmix.widestream.com.au/dmix/catalog/admin/includes/

touch configure.php

chmod 706 configure.php

If chmod 706 does not work, please try chmod 777.

If you are running this installation procedure under a Microsoft Windows environment, try renaming the existing configuration file so a new file can be created.

{Cancel} {Retry}

So i do as it says with the 706, then the 777. So my files are empty and completely writable.

I have deleted and started 'touch configure.php' in both required dir's again, with SU also, whilst then chown'ing it bak to all users in a vain attempt to pass the dreaded Step 7.

(P.S - This is my first post but I have been avidly reading all the posts to help me out with the install for several weeks now. I signed up a few days ago when i hit my first problem that i could find no resolve with in the forums and wiki's etc. I solved it without posting(yay for me) so now I hit what i hope is the last hurdle...not. I must say that this forum is amazing. Even beats the python ones. globals_register patch is on BSD osCommmerce install also. )

Thanks,

conno

If your permissions are correct then it should be working but you can always set your configure.php files manually instead of using the install routine if you cannot get it to work.

One thing to keep in mind is that the cvs packages are not meant to be used in production stores. They are works in progress and wil have bugs, unless you really know what you are doing you should be using the milestone version.

The Knowledge Base is a wonderful thing.

Do you have a problem? Have you checked out Common Problems?

There are many very useful osC Contributions

Are you having trouble with a installed contribution? Have you checked out the support thread found Here

BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP!!! You did backup, right??

Thanks for quick reply...

Manually edit them? Then what is the install for?

Also I wasnt so clear - I am using the stable release its just I checked out the CVS to compare versions just out of curiosity. Im using oscommerce-2.2ms2.

I hope I didnt make a boo boo :-"

That did it. Thanks very much. I wont ever need that install script again i think. The manual way is much easier(and quicker)

Actually, although osCommerce is supposedly Windows compatable (and it does work fine on Windows once set up) - there is a folder called Win32 in the original osCommerce zip file which has an alternative configure.php file to take account of the Windows (as opposed to Unix/Linux) environment.

Most errors reported here with osCommerce on Windows relate to just that installation problem - so I'd say you're correct in doing a manual install on Windows.

I had problems only with my prod bsd install. My windows one was fine. But I checked the package and you are right.

Thanks for the comments - yes, it took long enough! Check back in a few weeks time, it's going to look a whole lot different - javascript drop down menus, new colours etc. That's how the 'Template for fixed width site' came about - I didn't want to have to do it from scratch each time!
