Is it possible to apply taxes to specific products AND to specific provinces?

I have tried to configure the tax process to no avail on several OSCommerce installations.

Anyone's knowledge regarding tax configuration is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

You can set up the taxes for individual products and for specific zones by doing the following (I'll use US states for the example):

Under Locations/Taxes | Zones

Make sure you have all your zones (provinces) listed (ie Zone Name, Zone code, Country)

Under Locations/Taxes | Tax Zones

Add each Zone that you need (eg Florida, New York, etc)

As you enter each Zone click on the folder view of the zone to add the correct contry and zone, (eg click on the Florida Tax Zone folder and add United States as Country, Florida as Zone.

Under Locations/Taxes | Tax Classes

Create a Tax Class to match the number of combinations that you want (eg States starting with F, States starting with O etc)

Under Locations/Taxes | Tax Rates

Create a new tax rate you require for each area that you want to tax.

This will give you a choice of Tax Class (you defined this above)

Also it will list your Zones (agin from above)

Enter the Tax rate you want and a short descriprion.

To create a Tax Class with different taxes for different zones, just repeat the step above, choose the same Tax Class, a new zone, new rates and description.

To get all this to work, when you enter products, select the appropriate Tax Class that you want for that product. Customers from the zone will then be charged the correct tax.

Hope this helps

Ok I will try to work it out with your instructions but I have to admit it seems quite unclear still.

However, I will get back to you if I have any problems or not. Thanks for your reply. Anyone else with who is knows how to setup taxes, feel free to add your support.

Thanks,

Dave.

Ok that didn't work.

I am still trying to figure this one out to no avail.

This can be frustrating no doubt. If there is someone that can maybe guide me through the process and make the above a little more clear, that would be great!

Thank you though.

I'll second the confusion. I went through all the steps you described above and now have what look to be the correct tax zones for my situation here in Atlantic Canada. We charge HST (15%) to everyone in 3 local provinces, GST (7%) to everyone else in Canada, and no tax to anyone outside of Canada.

Now, when I go into Admin to add a new product, under Tax Class I see...

--none--

HST taxable

GST taxable

No tax

That's not what I want. I want to see taxable and non-taxable as choices when I add a product. The tax classes should then be applied automatically as the customer checks out, based on their address.

OK we ReALLy have to figure this out. I'm going to speak to a person who works with me. Apparetly he has the answer but is much to busy these past two or three weeks.

I'm sure this CAN be accomplished.

Thanks.

Acforsale: That didn't quite work. Your instructions were a tad vague at times. It happens.

Basically one product is to be taxed. Just one product if you live in Canada and only one tax rate.

Is there a simple fix???

If I understand this thread correctly:

The fix is in contributions, it is by Peter Mosier, called Canadian Tax Setup Notes

Now, what it does is follow the process based on the original install of osCommerce (ie. no changes to files). The result however, includes the PST and GST taxes together on one line (ie. PST 7% + GST 8% = x.xx) and does the same for shipping taxes. Also includes HST for appropriate provinces. Still trying to find a way to show these on separate lines but near as I can tell there are problems with each method I've seen. The Canadian Separate Tax Hack (to search for it in contributions you should spell separate as 'seperate') for example, says that it does not support charging HST. The Canadian Tax Display - not sure if that works as required either for HST - it only talks about PST and GST that I've seen so far. That's where my understanding is at the moment. I am going to try each of these and see if they help but currently I have only used the setup notes I refer to above and these do add the taxes correctly except on one line.

Hope that helps
