Is OSC right for me? (noob post warning!)

Hi...new to the board here. I'd appreciate your recommendations for this, cause I've spent the last 24 hours looking at options and it's driving me nuts.

I need a shop that support a mixed shopping cart that

1) Sells Digital goods (downloads, mp3, pdf)

2) Sell physical goods

3) Can sell two types of subscriptions to two password protected areas

Other considerations:

* I am running a Linux server with MySQL, so PHP is likely best option, But--

* I am close to a complete novice on PHP (so, while OSC looks cool, I don't know if it's the best option). However, I know my way around HTML solidly and can learn things fairly quickly.

* I will be using an Authorize.net account with my merchant. I would prefer to use AIM integration as we already have a dedicated SSL certificate included with our server.

* Finally, it really needs to integrate with our existing web design, which is very professional looking.

* Oh, yeah, and I'm a complete cheap #$%. So I'm looking to do this for a couple hundred bucks, plus my own sweat equity.

I REALLY appreciate any considerations/advice on this one. It's sort of time-sensitive at this point, so I'll be checking back a lot today. Feel free to PM me as well.

#1 and #2 answers are yes.

#3 is possible however needs custom work, as would any other ecommerce solution.

html is static coding, while php with mysql allows you to have 'dynamic' data, which means once original programming is completed, adding/deleting products is via a menu in an admin area. html is a bit tougher to do that.

authorizenet works well with osCommerce, however you should start using the cURL version,.

for doing it for a few hundred, well, you have many hours of work ahead of you.

anyone who is good and know what they are doing and does it for a living and will back their work cant do it for that.

I'm sorry if I wasn't clear. In this case I'm saying that I am willing to invest $200 on pre-programmed scripts or programs to assist me in getting the job done. Hope that clears up. THanks for your reply btw.

If you are going to do the work or most of the work yourself then the only deal killer may be the subscriptions. I do not believe that any of the subbscription contributions really work correctly though they may well be a good place to start you will probably need some custom coding for that.

The Knowledge Base is a wonderful thing.

Do you have a problem? Have you checked out Common Problems?

There are many very useful osC Contributions

Are you having trouble with a installed contribution? Have you checked out the support thread found Here

BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP!!! You did backup, right??

Ahhh ... okay ... well if someone who reads this knows a solution for the password thing (i.e. plug-in, script, prior code experience etc), I would appreciate it.

Otherwise, it seems like what I should do is just roll out with the first two, then add the coding/get bids for the coding for the password system after everything else is done. Not ideal, but I can survive with that for now.

So, then is OS Commerce still a good idea for me, or am I going to be banging my head against the wall for days since I'm clueless about PHP?

as long as you have a valid payment gateway, and use the curl fix not the aim works great.

also use the download controller contributioin, will help you a lot more in controlling your files.

i have many sites selling both downloads and ship products, once setup properly, easy to do.

Thanks. I'm assuming by curl fix you're referring to this? http://www.oscommerce.com/community/contributions,2184

I'm thinking that since the password/username thing is such a beast and will probably only account for a minor portion of my sales, I may just set up protected sections on my site. Then when people buy it, I'll manually create their user and pass and send them the info. ...I guess... :-" Then if it starts to become a pain, I'll find someone to code it for me.

Setting up downloads are not really a problem. The issue is the subscriptions (recurring payments) part of the equation.

Ah ... maybe this isn't as bad, then. I'll clarify. These subscriptions are one-time only, lifetime, to a certain section of the site. There are two kinds, but basically, once you've bought it, you get a username and password and you're in for good. There are no recurring fees. At a point the user is aware about, the content will stop updating, but they can come back and access it at any time.

:sweating: Does that make this easier?
