Only Products in CateoriesBox

I would like to have a site set up with only products, no categories. If I create only products and no categories in admin the categoriesBox in my left column apears empty. I want to try to do this without having to create categories of the same name as the products and placing each product in its own category. Does anyone know of a way to get the categoriesBox to show the products instead of the categories? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

the obvious solution would be to create a product box and not mis-use the catagory one.
