New install, any pitfalls to avoid before I start?

Now that I have the default store loaded, I want to go to the admin panel and do some basic configuring before I do real dirty customization.

 

Are there any features or pitfalls in the Admin panel that anyone would advise me to avoid? On another forum I was promptly advised to rename my admin folder and delete file_manager.php. I was wondering if there were any more tips...The earlier I can avoid problems the better...

 

Also are there any tut's here on advanced customization techniques? A search turned up nothing.

There is not really any good general answer for customizing your store. Pick something you want to change and try and change it. If you have problems you can do a specific search and ask specific questions. Reading the knowledge base is a good idea if you have not already done so. Browsing the contributions is a good idea and check out the stores in the My store section of the forum will give you some idea of what can be done.
