but it didn't work

check out the site, the value for it has been set to 0

does it have anything to do with me having the product listing in rows or in column?

no that should not matter, I also display columns and it should work in both cases.

 

the only other (dirty) alternative is to go into the module products_listing.php

and remove the line (or comment it out) that produces the button.
