Yirtne Posted December 14, 2004 Posted December 14, 2004 I'm quite a beginner at this. I'm trying to set up my oscommerce website on an Internet server I own completely. I would like to set up secure transactions because I would like to receive credit card payments directly, without going through external companies like paypal or so. The problem is that I find quite unclear how do ssl work. Can someone please briefly describe the steps I should do? Do I have to buy a verisign certificate or something like that, or is there another (cheaper, preferably free ^_^) way? Thank you for any help!
♥Vger Posted December 14, 2004 Posted December 14, 2004 If you own your own server then the only option is to purchase a full ssl certificate. GeoTrust Express SSL only costs $49 a year for a full 128 bit certificate. If you have your own server you are going to have to do the installation yourself, and how you do this will depend upon which control panel you use. First step is to go to your control panel and generate a CSR (Certificate Signing Request), and you make a note of this text. Then you go somewhere to purchase your certificate and you provide the CSR as part of the process. Then you get your certificate (also text), and where you generated your CSR in your control panel you now 'Import' the certificate into there. Then you reboot the server for the httpd files to be updated. Vger
Yirtne Posted December 14, 2004 Author Posted December 14, 2004 Thanks, useful information. I'll see what I can do. I think I'll wait until (and IF) my store makes some sales, before spending any more money. bank and post money transfers will do for now.
Guest Posted December 14, 2004 Posted December 14, 2004 your host may have a shared ssl option available, contact them and ask if shared ssl is available.

I can install anything I want, but I have to do it by myself! don't wanna spam but... by the way, is anybody looking for some web space on a *fast* server located in europe? as stated before, there's no ssl but I have apache/php/mysql and the server speeds (both for cpu and bandwith) are very good.
♥Vger Posted December 15, 2004 Posted December 15, 2004 It's against forum riules to promote your own services. Anyway - you won't get many takers for osCommerce site sunless you install an SSL cert on the server that folks can use as their shared ssl. Also, you need to be able to give people their own control panels so that they can set up features on their own accounts - and install their own ssl certs if they want to from the control panel they have. Seems like you're a long way from that kind of setup at the moment. Vger

I did this one for my father's company, but mine is more of a games hosting program.
