Adding fields to customer accounts

i was wondering how to add more Required fields to my customers accounts when they create and account cause i have a Web Forum as well and would like them to also post there user name from my forum if they belong to it and if they dont belong to the forums they would have to type in some thing else to require them to create an account is this possible ?? if not then how do i just make an area for them to post there forum user name ? to the rest of the information
