PHP text editing

I need help please. My web host is setting me up with osCommerce. The people working on my account left the company. The new person is not well versed in PHP or osCommerce. I am trying to edit some text in the File Manager but am apparently blocked by the Permissions. How do I change the Permissions and what cautions should I be aware of? Is there an overall Administrator user with access to this? If so where do I find it. Nobody knows at my web host.

My new web host contact is trying to use Dreamweaver to edit my site but is having trouble viewing what he is working on. Please advise.

I am using osCommerce 2.2-MS2

Thank you very much.

First off, don't use the filemanager program in admin to edit files. It is broken and will cause you grief. You will need to get an editor to do this. There are dozens and dozens available and there are several threads on the forums suggesting which is the favorite (search on php editor).

How you change the permissions will depend on your setup. You may be able to change them via your hosts control panel. If not, get an FTP program (you will need one anyway to get the files so that you can edit them). Same recommendation - search the forums for ftp program. Once you have it, select an item you want to change permissions on and right click. Most will allow you to do it this way.

If you get stumped on any of this, just ask again. It's tough getting started but worth the effort. :)
