However, the brand new paypal ipn module v1.0 available from contributions is dead easy to install, and doesn't require that you edit any other files. And this does have a 'test mode'. To use this you need to register to use the paypal sandbox feature, and you'll need to set up two accounts - one as the business, and one as the customer. It will take you through all of the steps as if you were actually sending money to someone except the actual transfer of funds is not performed.
