Guest Posted December 7, 2004 Posted December 7, 2004 Is it wise using a web host that uses osCommerce -1 when you want to use osCommerce ms2.2. If the host does not use the ms2.2 version will this make it harder to set up or not, especially concerning the server. Host at the moment ipowerweb, may think of moving to ixwebhosting that uses version osCommerce ms.2.. thanks for any help titch
peterr Posted December 7, 2004 Posted December 7, 2004 Hi, Please use the latest osCommerce, you will definitely have problems with contributions and other issues, if you use an earlier version. I say this out of experience, supporting several osC websites, some older versions, some the latest. The latest are easier to maintain, ........ by far. Peter
Guest Posted December 7, 2004 Posted December 7, 2004 sorry what i mean is if your web host doesnt run the new version can it be harder to install , or could their be more or different problems , say to a hosting site that uses the new version as my host site only uses the osCommerce -1 version
♥Vger Posted December 7, 2004 Posted December 7, 2004 If your web host is only supplying an older version it may mean that the newer version won't run on their servers. This is something you'd have to check with them. Vger

As a 'rule of thumb', I have seen in many other posts, that if you use a 'packaged installer' to install osCommerce, you are also asking for potential problems, so you are better off if your host does not do the installation. Best to do it the simple way, unzip the file and upload all to your website, add a database and username/password, go to install, nothing could be easier, really. Peter
ozcsys Posted December 7, 2004 Posted December 7, 2004 Another advantage of doing the install yourself is you will start the learning process a little earlier. When you let your host do an automatic install you learn nothing about the files or how to interact or make changes to osC. Installing it yourself will give you information that you will find useful later on. The Knowledge Base is a wonderful thing. Do you have a problem? Have you checked out Common Problems? There are many very useful osC Contributions Are you having trouble with a installed contribution? Have you checked out the support thread found Here BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP!!! You did backup, right??
XinXang Posted December 7, 2004 Posted December 7, 2004 i think what titch is asking is...his host runs osc1, but he wants to install osc2.2 himself. What he wants to know is if he will have problems with his 2.2 install because of his webhost running 1. I don't have much experience either, but I think the answer is no as long as they are running relatively new versions of php and mysql. you'll have your own database so there should be no conflict. (i think)
