chainged php now I get bad error

I followed what I found in the knowledge base to change the drop down country menu to show the united states, but when I cahnged it and I go to the catalog home page I get this

 

Parse error: parse error, unexpected T_CONSTANT_ENCAPSED_STRING, expecting ')' in /home/hustonb/public_html/catalog/includes/functions/html_output.php on line 277

then I changed it back to what it originally was but, I still get the same error message, can you please help me?

Most likely, you have removed the closing ). Look at the original file and compare the two to be sure. But you should remove that change and install the Country-State selector contribution. It is a much nicer fix.
