Variable column width

Hi guys,

 

Probably a very stupid question but how do I set the width for the left column so that it will always be wide enough to show my categories on a single line?

 

I know I can set the absolute number of pixels in application_top but I want the column to become wider or thinner depending on the category text.

maybe the easiest way would be to use the line in the application_top.php

 

determine the longest category title?

 

but have a look in the contributions, there are many weird and wonderful things over there.
