Site Backgrounds - To be dark, or not to be dark?

Greetings Forum members,

I am a newbie to OScommerce and have to say what a fantastic product & forum support it has here. I am in the process of putting together a site, which i will put up for the merciless criticism of the forum when it is closer to being completed.

My Q is this: Whats the general consensus on background color? I see a lot of sites with the traditional white background. Odd as it may seem i actually prefer a dark or neutral background, to the retina searing White.

Is it a big no no to have a d B) ark background? Whats everyone think, im interested to know?

And with a 9 in 10 search rate success the no.1 returned Oscommerce forum hit:

"The administrator has enabled flood control - please try again in 30 seconds."

Never fails.

Every time.

It is supposed to be easier on the eye having dark on light i.e. black writing on white background.

Your online success is Paramount.

I usually look at the big guys when I have these types of questions (i.e. Amazon, Dell, Yahoo, etc). If no other major players are doing a dark background then I would believe that they have a reason.

Personally, I don't like the dark backgrounds. It is very difficult to read and looks less professional. Just my opinion...
