prototypezero Posted November 20, 2004 Posted November 20, 2004 Hey, my sister just opened a business, and she asked me to make her a website in which she can sell all her items and stuff. ( Items include forks, knives, spoons, plates, and the such) Im taking a webpage desing class, so i allready learned HTML, and basic CSS, but havent gotten deeper into uploading files via FTP and using SQL and all that, so i wanted something that had customizable templates, and i could get around with ease. My sister is also looking for something that has a shopping cart, and people can then pay via Paypal, or any other methods, so i kinda need help with that too. and finally, i wanted to know a list of things i should know and be proficient in before opening an eComerce. ex: should know html, laws of eComerce, basic photoshop for making icons and banners. you know stuff like that. or know a website that explains all the basics of it. Thank you all for your time in reading this. :D -Rafael
Guest Posted November 20, 2004 Posted November 20, 2004 Hi Rafael, Can't say I can personally help you out with much, as i dont have a site up and running myself, but am sort of learnign the ropes as I go. I do know however tha you have come the right place as the people here do a fantastic job and there is normally plenty of help to be found. One important thing I will say is always search the forums before posting, you will be amazed the amount of times that a problem you are having may have been asked before. another thing is to always back up files before making any changes, that way if you do screw up and I do often, you can always go back to where you were before. Good luck, and hope it all works out for your sis. Ian P.S if you do find any good beginner guides etc let me know :)
♥bruyndoncx Posted November 20, 2004 Posted November 20, 2004 look for the customization guide, it is loaded as a contribution and there is a thread as well. This explains how to get started customizing osC. And then ofcourse, don't forget to check the knowledge base site, http://www.oscommerce.info I'd suggest to install the software and then spend some time reading up in the KB, and experimenting. Also some contributions are really usefull in understanding how osCommerce works, how the php files interact. KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON I do not use the responsive bootstrap version since i coded my responsive version earlier, but i have bought every 28d of code package to support burts effort and keep this forum alive (albeit more like on life support). So if you are still here ? What are you waiting for ?! Find the most frequent unique errors to fix: grep "PHP" php_error_log.txt | sed "s/^.* PHP/PHP/g" |grep "line" |sort | uniq -c | sort -r > counterrors.txt
prototypezero Posted November 20, 2004 Author Posted November 20, 2004 Allright, im downloading the software right now to mess around with it, and see how it w  orks. Thanks.
Guest Posted November 21, 2004 Posted November 21, 2004 Rafael, I might also suggest asking one question per thread. It's hard to try to answer all of the questions you raised and it would become a messy thread if we tried to. The Simple Template System (STS) contribution might be a good idea for you. It is recommended to apply it before any other contributions. ed
