Lost connection to MySQL server during query

I have a weird problem.

Sometimes, maybe 1 of 100 page requests, I get an error message on my shop:

 

2013 - Lost connection to MySQL server during query

2006 - MySQK server has gone away

 

select count(*) as total from sessions where sesskey = 'xxxxxxxxxxxxxx'

 

 

Why? How fix?

I have tried different mysql/apache settings and shop sessions/cache settings, but nothing seems to help.
