Can anyone show me what is role of .htaccess file? if I want to set password for my directory, what should I do?

try a google search for .htaccess. there are many very informative sites and also links to sites which will encrypt your passwords for use in the password file.

but beware of actual setting in the .htaccess as at least one cont. delivers following .htacces-code :

Deny from all

Options All

AuthType Basic

AuthUserFile /PathToYourFolderwithPasswordfile/

Require valid-user

AuthName "admin"

Satisfy any

 

which, at least for my isp, needs to be:

AuthUserFile /PathToYourFolderwithPasswordfile/

AuthGroupFile /dev/null

AuthName EnterPassword

AuthType Basic

require user (UsernameInPasswordfile)
