custom cart/checkout fields

I'm selling prints of digital photos, but i don't want to list each photo as a product. Instead, I'd like to list 3 products... 4x6, 5x7, 8x10... from browsing thumbnails from the file system, i'd like to be able to choose one of the three products and attach extra data like the name of the digital image chosen.... I would need to keep this extra data in the cart through completed order. Would love to use the "options" fields in cart and order tables but in cart it only points to an option id not a value.

 

Am i right in assuming i need to add a custom field to customers_basket and orders_products, use a hidden field with my extra data and modify the insert statements for basket and order? Anybody done this before?
