You had to *buy* a shared SSL?

The first thing I'd do is find a new host.

Well, you don't need to configure the shared SSL, they should have already done that. What you need to do is configure your OSC cart to use it. In your configure.php, there is a define for the SSL url, and there is a switch to turn the SSL on. For *most* shared SSLs, that's all you have to do. Some shared SSLs are a little more tricky, though.

And if you really want to be professional, you can buy your own SSL now for $49 per month, and cusotmers will stay on your own domain, with an HTTPs, instead of going to some crazy url of hte shared SSL.

wow, 49/month, i want some of that for selling ssl's.

in your configure.php file set ssl to true and put the path your host gave you for accessing your ssl, set your https cookie to match it.

turn off force cookie use in the store admin

IMHO a shared SSL is fine versus your own domain SSL. as long as it works and does not give errors there is no problem in using it.

some people have one ssl certificate but may have 15 to 20 sites which require ssl, the main thing the customer wants is to see the little 'padlock' at the bottom without any errors and be able to see who provided the certificate . . . .

Yeah, it's the main thing, but not always the only thing. Some people will be derrered by a shared SSL. I just think that they are cheap enough now that it shouldn't be an issue. For folks just starting out though, not sure if they are serious yet, I can see a shared SSL as a viable alternative.
