Howto install multiple contributions

I'm a newbie, just please let me know if this topic was already discussed. I did make searches but failed.

What is the best way to apply contributions? The first contribution I applied rewrote quite a number of original files, then next contribution rewrote what was already rewritten, then the shop crashed :(

Is there any manual or guidelines or rules for installing contributions?

You can generally only copy files to install a contribution if you have an unchanged shop. There are some contributions that don't affect your files but they are few in number. After you install the first one, you have to manually install the others. All contributions come with instructions for doing it both ways. You just need to read the instructions to install it manually.

i use a coe compare program named beyond compare, which helps me merge the code together.
