Editing Text in the opening page?

Guest

Recommended Posts

:'( Hello! I am very new to oscommerce. I finally found out how to open the first page hence my problem. I realize I am really quite a dummy when it comes to these things, but I am willing to learn. Can someone please explane to me in simple terms where I can access the opening page to edit the text on it with the tools file manager? Please explane it in two or less sylables per word.Please over look my poor spelling as I must type with my right hand alone(I was left handed) .I had a stupid stroke so I am learning to type all over again with the wrong hand! Oh well. Just look over any misteakes I happen to miss on correction please. Thank you all for your kind attention.

Jerry :(

Do not use the online file manager to edit the pages as there are known issues with doing this in that this can remove backslashes from the code causing parse errors or can add whitespace to files which causes the headers already sent warning.

It is better to use an ftp program such as ws_ftp to download the file edit offline then ftp upload to the server.

The front page gives the instructions to open file catalog/includes/languages/english/index.php and edit the text between the single quotes of the

define('TEXT_MAIN', 'Remove the text here and place the text that you want to have shown in the front page, remember to escape and apostrophes such as let\'s so as to stop the code from breaking and then end the text thus');

a starting example is this

<?php
/*
 $Id: index.php,v 1.1 2003/06/11 17:38:00 hpdl Exp $

*/

define('TEXT_MAIN', '');
define('TABLE_HEADING_NEW_PRODUCTS', 'New Products For %s');
define('TABLE_HEADING_UPCOMING_PRODUCTS', 'Upcoming Products');
define('TABLE_HEADING_DATE_EXPECTED', 'Date Expected');

if ( ($category_depth == 'products') || (isset($HTTP_GET_VARS['manufacturers_id'])) ) {
 define('HEADING_TITLE', 'Let\'s See What We Have Here');
 define('TABLE_HEADING_IMAGE', '');
 define('TABLE_HEADING_MODEL', 'Model');
 define('TABLE_HEADING_PRODUCTS', 'Product Name');
 define('TABLE_HEADING_MANUFACTURER', 'Manufacturer');
 define('TABLE_HEADING_QUANTITY', 'Quantity');
 define('TABLE_HEADING_PRICE', 'Price');
 define('TABLE_HEADING_WEIGHT', 'Weight');
 define('TABLE_HEADING_BUY_NOW', 'Buy Now');
 define('TEXT_NO_PRODUCTS', 'There are no products to list in this category.');
 define('TEXT_NO_PRODUCTS2', 'There is no product available from this manufacturer.');
 define('TEXT_NUMBER_OF_PRODUCTS', 'Number of Products: ');
 define('TEXT_SHOW', '<b>Show:</b>');
 define('TEXT_BUY', 'Buy 1 \'');
 define('TEXT_NOW', '\' now');
 define('TEXT_ALL_CATEGORIES', 'All Categories');
 define('TEXT_ALL_MANUFACTURERS', 'All Manufacturers');
} elseif ($category_depth == 'top') {
 define('HEADING_TITLE', 'What\'s New Here?');
} elseif ($category_depth == 'nested') {
 define('HEADING_TITLE', 'Categories');
}
?>

then place your text into the

define('TEXT_MAIN', '');

section between the two single quotes

define('TEXT_MAIN', '');
marked here in red.

:'(

Hello again,I am afraid I must show my absolute ignorance, but for the life of me I cannot find the file catalog from the string, catalog/includes/languages/english/index.php I have looked everywhere I can think of including index.php but I simply cannot find catalog anywhere. Does anyone know where it should be located? I have decided I am going to hold my breath till I turn green if I can not find this stupid file!

Thank you for any help! I remain the dummy for today!

depending on how things were installed you may not have a catalog directory it may be called store or shop or the cart may have been instaled into the root in which case it would be includes/languages/english/index.php
