Easy question!

I need my full category names (subcategory names actually) to appear in the main part of the screen, but only an abbreviation should appear in the categories box.

 

So I'm thinking I need to create a variable called "category_short" or something, give it a different value associated with each different category, and then have the categories box call the new variable. But I have no idea how to actually do this. :)
