Guest Posted August 2, 2004 Posted August 2, 2004 i have successfully installed the osCommerce shopping cart software. everything is working great, but the admin section is not asking for a user/pass and is accessible to the public. how do i set a user/pass for access to the admin section of the shopping cart? does this have anything to do with an SSL? also, when i establish a merchant account do i still need an SSL (like Geotrust)? and what does the SSL do?

When you do you need to change the path in admin/configure There are contributions that will secure your admin with passwords. When u get a merchant account you will still need a SSL gateway. They should supply it it depends on what options you want. Do you want customers to fill out secure info on your site then transmite it.? You will need some type of SSL even if it is from your server. or you can just use paypal. then you will just transfer the cart and your customers will fill out the card info on Pay Pals secure site SSL is the software for secure transmissions of transactions. Keeps away prying eyes. U will have a small padlock in the info bar(Bottom Right in IE) when u are on a secure site also they start with https//: instead of just http//: ( Note the s)
