New Error w/ directory?

All of the sudden, I am getting "Error: Catalog images directory does not exist: ...../gifts/catalog/images/" when I try to add new products-the only thing I have changed in 24 hours is turning off search engine safe urls- does anyone know what's wrong??? :( :(

p.s. I just checked, and the directory is there and is 777, but I'm still getting the message above

maybe check with your host to see if they have changed any server settings.

:( I checked with my hosting company and they think that its a problem in the script- :( :( and the images file isn't the only problem, also payment modules and shipping and order total-so I haven't been able to process orders for days!! Any other suggestions?
