Help! Can whats_new.php for categories

I've searched all night and can't seem to find any threads on this.

 

Is there a way to have the whats_new.php box only call products from the category and subcategories that the client is currently viewing?

 

So if he were looking at Software, he'd only see new products from Software and it's subs in the whats_new.php infobox?

 

If this is too major a task, if someone could just help me to specify a single category the box will pull from? This I could settle for and just make it work how I need it to.

If anybody sees this thread, there is a contrib for this. I think its called Categoriies tree boxes
