Can I have multiple stores in one website?

I was wondering if its possible to have more than one store on one website.

 

For instance, say I wanted to sell sugar products and also spice products. I want the sugar store catalog to have a red/blue color and design scheme. I want the spice store catalog to have a brown/red color scheme.

 

Could I install stores in different directories on my webspace? Are there any other ways to achieve my goal? Is there any problem with this?

 

Any answers/advice would be appreciated.

for example:

 

www.urdomain.com/store1/index.php

www.urdomain.com/store2/index.php

 

or

 

www.urdomain.com/store1/catalog/index.php

www.urdomain.com/store2/catalog/index.php

 

just make sure to make a separate db for each 1

make sure ur hosting allows u more than one MySQL database

If I was running multiple stores on one site I'd prefer two databases (less to go wrong) but it's not really necessary.
