New to OS Commerce - Advice please

Hi,

I've recently been looking at OS Commerce as an alternative to Actinic Catalog.

Have a number of questions...

How easy is it to use? Regarding the actual installation (mention databases and i get worried).

Is it search engine friendly - can i add h1 tags? How?

Ive got the demo running - when it comes to specifying the page name - do i have to create the page name as in another page or is it just asking for a weblink name?

Ideally i just want something that will enable me to have a simple site thats effective and up and running quickly.

Sorry for the many questions.

Thank you

Regards

Databases, get a parachute and jump in. Seriously even if your not familiar with it, after hundreds of hours even I caught on. Lots of things can be changed and added, lots of little things to drive you nuts. Great program tho.

this is a very easy customisable system that leaves actinic in the dark ages, I say this as a convert from actinic to oscommerce and will not go back to that again.

Lots of help and advice available in this forum, knowledge base is comming along with the correct layout and linking of advice.

Hi Again,

Thanks for the replies

*241* - nice to know that an ex actinic user has moved to OSC. Actinic is good although it has its limitations. Ive been a user of Actinic since V3 - and i think its time to try something different.

Further questions - Anyone recommend a cheap hosting company for OSC to run successful. Is it a case that you just download it in the right directory and away you go?

Back to databases again - i see hosting companies offering sites which can use php and mysql - is that what i need? Or do they have to specifically offer a database which generally triples the cost of hosting ..

I just want a simple e-comm site which makes life easy for the consumer, seller and which is search engine friendly.

Thanks again :D

Regards

nope php and mysql are what you need. Most hosting companies now adays offer oscommerce built in so all you have to do is create a blank database and click on the install oscommerce link and away you go. I use powweb as my hosting and I am happy with them. 8 bucks a month, plenty of storage space and I get 5gb/day (DAY) of transfer. nice. Easy oscommerce setup too.

Hello Ryan,

Thanks for the speedy reply. I appreciate that.

When you say create a blank database - how does one do that. Do i just drag and drop an empty mdb file to the directory?

By the looks of the powweb site - it looks like if i take the package ill be up and running. OSC is already installed isnt it ....

After being with Actinic for so many years - its worrying when movin to something different.

Thanks again

powweb runs the most current package. No, if you go to forum.powweb.com they have a forum there just for oscommerce and it will tell you how to install it. Once you create an account, you have to create a database in the ops panel. Then also in ops, there is a link to install oscommerce and it will take you through the steps. It creates the tables and fills in the info to begin with for you.

Hello again,

Thanks ryan ....

a step by step approach i think thats what i need. ;)

Powweb looks like it has everything i could need. Low price as well.

I had thought as an alternative to OSC to create html pages and then use Mals-e basket facility - but i think that would be more cumbersome and time consuming.

Thank you

you can do anything you want to with oscommerce. There are a lot of good sites using it, and a lot of stock ones too. Just depends how much time you want to put into it and how much you are willing to learn. I thought with the help of these forums, making my site wasn't bad at all.

Hi there,

If I were you, I'd check out ROSSLO Webhosting (www.rosslo.com). They're cheap and offer very good support. I am with them myself and do not regret the switch!
